Acura ILX Endurance Racer to Debut at 25 Hours of Thunderhill

All-new ILX Developed, Prepped and to be Raced by Team of Honda Associates

Img_6605
Developed and prepared by Team Honda Research- West, a competition version of the new 2013 Acura ILX will be unveiled this week at the 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, prior to making its competition debut at next month's 25 Hours of Thunderhill endurance race.

A pair of E1 class Acura ILX sedans, prepared to NASA U.S. Touring Car specs, will be entered for the traditional 25-hour endurance race that annually concludes the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) season at the challenging three-mile Thunderhill road course north of Sacramento, California.

Team Honda Research-West (THR-W) is primarily made up of Torrance, California-based associates from Honda R&D Americas, Inc., who work after-hours to showcase Honda and Acura products on the track. The team received a pair of new Acura ILX "body in white" bare chassis earlier this year from Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC, the exclusive global production source for the model. Additionally, a pair of "donor" cars from American Honda Motor Co., Inc. was used to provide suspension, powertrain, interior and electronic components.

Once the chassis and donor cars were delivered to the THR-W workshop, an extensive build program commenced that included the use of as many OEM components as possible, to retain serviceability and test outright durability of Acura's newest sedan. In preparing the cars for the grueling Thunderhill event, THR-W members focused their efforts less on performance modifications and more on reducing vehicle weight, to achieve the performance targets set by the team.

Safety equipment required by NASA included a full roll cage (designed by THR-W and built by Solo Motorsports); Bride Gardis III race seat; OMP competition steering wheel; Schroth safety harness; Brockway Engineering D Gauge digital OBD2 gauge; and Braille lightweight battery. Changes to the exterior included a Baja Designs LED lighting system for long winter night-running, a THR-W-designed front splitter and an APR GTC-200 rear spoiler.

Red Line oil lubricates the K24Z7 engine and 6-speed transmission. Cold air enters the engine through an AEM intake, while DEI heat rejection products help keep the heat under control from exhaust gases flowing through the custom-built AEM/120 Racing exhaust. H&R suspension and Enkei RPF1 wheels fitted with BF Goodrich R1 race tires complete the Acura ILX competition package.

Honda Performance Development (HPD), responsible for Honda racing programs ranging from entry-level categories to the IZOD IndyCar Series and World Endurance Championship, also contributed several racing-specific components to the ILX project. These included an HPD-lightened flywheel and racing clutch package, limited-slip differential, motor mounts, anti-roll bars and rear upper suspension control arms. All of these parts are available to racers through the HPD Honda Racing Line program.

The THR-W build team for the ILX includes a number of engineers and researchers from Honda R&D Americas (HRA). The team is headed by Project Leader Calvin Liu, a Design Engineer in the Surface Development Department. John Whiteman, Manager of the Advanced Product Planning Department, is responsible for race strategy and sponsorship. David Kirsch, Senior Engineer in the Information Technical Research Department, serves as Crew Chief and is responsible for the electrical system. Roy Richards, a coordinator in the Energy and Environmental Research Group, is responsible for budget and procurement of components for the team.

Once the initial build was complete, a testing program that included a pair of shakedown runs at Buttonwillow Raceway in southern California, followed by a more extensive run at Willow Springs International Raceway, was implemented to complete final preparations for Thunderhill.

The driving team for Thunderhill is headed by Matt Staal, Senior Planner, Advanced Product Planning, for HRA. Other members of the driver lineup include Project Leader Calvin Liu; Derek Ferretti, a Senior Modeler in the Styling Division at HRA; Sage Marie, Senior Manager of Public Relations at American Honda; Lee Niffenegger, a former SCCA National Champion and Senior Engineer in Business Development at HPD; Lawrence Hwang, Senior Stylist at HRA; Scott Nichol from Honda of Canada Manufacturing; Chad Gilsinger, a former SCCA National Champion and Senior Engineer at HRA in Ohio: and Brian Shanfeld, a former NASA National Champion, also from HRA in Ohio.

Founded in 1996, THR-W has a long record of success racing Honda products in both Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and NASA competition, with more than 50 race victories in a variety of classes. THR-W first raced at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in 2004 with an Acura Integra, and just a year later joined its sister THR team from Ohio in taking a pair of 2006 Honda Civic Si's to the E1 class 1-2 sweep, including a fourth-place finish overall. In 2006, THR-W took another podium finish in a Honda Civic Si and in 2010 debuted a Honda Fit in the new B-Spec category with a fantastic fourth-place E3 class finish.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Don't touch the glass when changing headlight bulbs

1

Most headlight bulbs now are filled with halogen and have special coatings on the outside of the glass. If you pick the bulb up by the glass with your fingers, you will leave trace amounts of oil and grease on the glass. When the bulb is used, that area of the glass will get hotter than the rest and it will eventually cause the bulb to crack. When changing headlight bulbs, only hold the metal bulb holder at the base, or make sure you're wearing rubber surgical / mechanic's gloves (clean ones) if you're touching the glass.

Big thanks to Alan F, who "had an excellent experience at the service dept," for this 5-star review on Yelp!

"Had an excellent experience at the service dept. Service advisor Michael took care of me and my Acura RSX. They serviced the car with oil and filter that I brought, vacuumed and washed the car. Since it was a Saturday they had hamburgers and hot dogs grilled outside so they fed us too. The price for service was more than resonable. Staff were excellent. I will go back again. This was my first experience with the Service Dept at Mac Churchill Acura." - Alan F.

2013 Acura ZDX Luxury Crossover To Get Numerous Enhancements in its Final Model Year

Equipped with new features and safety technologies; priced at $50,920*

Front_3_4_accy_v1_l

The innovative and stylish Acura ZDX crossover vehicle, introduced in 2009, will receive numerous styling and technology enhancements for the 2013 model year, which will be the final year on the market for ZDX as the Acura brand sharpens its focus on new models and core products, the company announced today.

The 2013 ZDX will receive several new features, including a redesigned front grille, front and rear parking sensors, power folding side mirrors and safety features such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). The 2013 Acura ZDX will go on sale October 19, 2012, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $50,920*.

"People shopping for a luxury crossover vehicle will find the Acura ZDX an even more attractive product," said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of the Acura Division. "Moving forward, we will continue to advance the Acura lineup with a focus on new core models, like the recently redesigned RDX and the upcoming all-new RLX flagship sedan, that provide the ideal balance of performance and fuel efficiency that is right for each product and a driving experience that is dynamic and emotional."

The ZDX is built in the same Alliston, Ontario plant as the Acura MDX, which shares the platform with ZDX. As a result, ZDX production will be discontinued in conjunction with the transfer of the popular MDX to the company's Lincoln, Alabama plant in early 2013 (as previously announced).

For 2013, the Acura ZDX will be sold as a single, valued-added package offering clients greater value on a luxury scale. Robust features now standard on the 2013 ZDX include the 435-watt Acura/ELS Surround® 10-speaker audio system with 15 GB hard disk drive (HDD) memory, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, 8-inch high-resolution VGA display, multi-view rear view camera, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® wireless telephone interface, ventilated and heated front seats with perforated premium Milano leather seating surfaces, Keyless Access System (with Smart Entry and pushbutton ignition) and dual-zone automatic climate control system.

The ZDX will receive several new exterior features for 2013, such as a redesigned front grille, front and rear bumpers with integrated parking sensors, power-folding auto-dimming side mirrors and a dark accent on the wheels for a sportier finish. The interior receives a new trim finish on the center console and a high contrast interior option.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) are two new safety features for the 2013 ZDX. The Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system can detect vehicles ahead of the ZDX. If the FCW system determines that a collision is possible with a detected vehicle, it provides the driver with visual and audio alerts to encourage avoidance actions. Lane Departure Warning (LDW) uses a camera mounted between the windshield and the rear-view mirror to detect lane lines on the road. If the driver begins to drift out of a detected lane without using the turn indicator, the system will provide the driver with visual and audible alerts.

The 2013 ZDX is equipped with an all-aluminum 3.7-liter V-6 engine that develops 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Performance is further enhanced by the ZDX's Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission that is designed to satisfy the most discerning enthusiast drivers. The 2013 ZDX EPA city/highway/combined fuel mileage is rated at 16/23/19 mpg**.

For customers seeking a great balance of utility and performance Acura will continue to offer vehicles in the luxury crossover space with the 5-passenger RDX and the TSX Sport Wagon. Acura also will continue to provide ZDX customers with a high-level of service and parts support throughout the life of their vehicles.

U.S. sales of Acura models increased 43.5 percent in September and rose nearly 30 percent to 115,773 units for the first nine-months of 2012, the Acura brand's best nine-month sales results since 2008. The Acura TL sedan, along with the MDX, RDX and TSX Sport Wagon crossover vehicles, have each posted double-digit gains for the year to date, including an 85.7-percent rise in sales of the redesigned RDX and a 25.2-percent gain for the TSX Sport Wagon. The all-new Acura ILX continues to gain momentum, posting its fifth consecutive monthly increase on September sales of 1,737 units.

Acura will debut its all-new 2014 Acura RLX luxury sedan on November 28, 2012, at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The new Acura flagship sedan will employ an array of new technologies unique to Acura, including the Precision All Wheel Steer™ system, the next-generation AcuraLink® Communication System, and the all-new Jewel Eye™ LED headlamps to deliver an entirely new level of performance, sophistication and comfort.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Is Your Car Road-Ready?

1

Taking a road trip soon? Before you pack your car and hit the road, consider conducting a pre-vehicle check to give you peace of mind as you travel miles from home and help make your journey safer. A thorough pre-trip vehicle check includes:

  • Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.
  • Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  • Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power.
  • Check the hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.
  • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  • Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

Satisfied Mac Churchill customer Jacque says "one of the many reasons I stay with Mac Churchill is the service department and the way they treat their customers." Great work, Taylor!

"Taylor Jones always takes excellent care of me and my vehicle making sure the maintenance on my MDX is always up to date. When I bring my car in for a rare issue he is diligent in locating and correcting the problem. Taylor always makes sure I get a loaner car while mine is undergoing maintenance and that I get my car back clean. "Professional and provide excellent customer service" says this 5-star review on DealerRater! Great job, Michael and David!

"I have leased three new TSX's from McChurchill Acura since 2010. Each year I go into to do an upgrade on my vehicle my sales guy David Nguyen and Michael West are the absolute best in working out all details prior to me stepping foot in the dealership. They are very professional and provide excellent customer service so that when I am ready to upgrade I simply come in and sign the paper work because all the back end office work and numbers are already determined so I can be on my way in my new vehicle. "I was amazed on how competitive they were with their pricing" says this 5-star review of Mac Churchill on DealerRater!

"I would highly recommend Mac Churchill Acura. I am an internet shopper and was amazed on how competitive they were with their pricing. My salesman, JJ or Jonathan Johnson, quickly responded to my email when inquiring about a vehicle. He was friendly, informative and was able to get a pretty good price on my trade via phone/email. I traveled 8 hours to make the trade and found that it was a long day (about 5 hours) in their office to finalize it. It is for that reason I am giving them a 4 out of 5 for overall experiencence. I will say that they did stick with the number they quoted me on the phone. I think the manager was wanting to lower my old car price, but JJ stepped up to the plate for me since I traveled so far to get this deal done and not to play games with me. I must say that I appreciated him doing so. I love my new car and am happy customer and will be back when my husband needs a new car." - ksucatfan

[MotorTrend]: 2013 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year Contender: Acura RDX

2013-acura-rdx-front-view-623x389

It’s sport/utility of the year time again! Before we announce the 2013 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year, though, we’re providing a refresher on this year’s contenders. The Range Rover Evoque earned the title last year — what will win for 2013? Check back on WOT every day as we run through the contenders in alphabetical order before giving you the chance to vote for your unofficial favorite and announcing the winner on MotorTrend.com on October 15 at 3 a.m. PDT/6 a.m. EDT.

The Acura RDX entered our competition like a fish swimming upstream. Where the industry is moving toward small-displacement, forced-induction engines, Acura went the opposite way. Gone are the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and “Super Handling All-Wheel Drive,” replaced with an off-the-shelf V-6 and an all-wheel-drive system borrowed from the RDX’s Honda CR-V cousin.

To Honda, it was a simple business decision. Customers demanded a softer ride, quieter cabin, smoother acceleration, and better fuel economy. The new RDX delivers all those things and with more power to boot.

Though it may not be the sporty, quirky crossover we loved, the RDX’s updated 273-horse V-6 drew strong praise. The handling, despite the lack of SH-AWD, also earned praise. “Surprisingly fun car to drive,” wrote road test editor Scott Mortara. “The all-wheel-drive system works just fine, even though it’s not SH-AWD.” He and others pointed out, though, that the all-season tires had very low limits and quickly put a stop to the fun. “The all-season tires scream like 12-year-olds at a slasher-flick sleepover,” quipped editor-in-chief Edward Loh. “You’re moving pretty quickly, though, despite the howling understeer.”

The RDX’s interior also drew friendly comments. Judges remarked favorably on the upscale cabin materials, and agreed that the center stack design was an improvement over the previous version.

Big thanks to Hans for this 5-star review on Yelp!

"My recent experience with the service department was positive.  Michael Lindley was helpful and seemed interested in finding a solution rather than be defensive or short.  I believe that Michael is genuine; I will go back to him if I need service needs from the dealership again. Everybody in the service department is actually pretty nice.  I also met one of their master techs, C. - he was really personable and knowledgeable.  I really appreciated that both Michael and C. took the time to ride with me in the car and spend time helping me understand the situation I was dealing with.  This combined with a previous experience where the service manager helped me out with a goodwill out of warranty repair from Acura is the reason why I'd recommend this dealership over the one in Plano.  I have no experience with the others.  Carbuying experience here is okay but was a little disorganized.  Good dealership overall." - Hans D.

"Extremely accommodating" says this 5-star review of one customer's recent service appointment! Fantastic work, Ian!

"I took my car in without an appointment and they were extremely accommodating. My service advisor Ian took the time to explain to me the recommended work and what each one meant. He gave me a list and put them in order of priority for me so that I could budget in the extra work needed to bring my car back to like-new. He was very patient with all of my questions and took the time to explain it all to me, something no other advisor, at any dealership, has done with me before. I will be recommending both Mac Churchill Acura and Ian McKenzie to all of my family and friends for all of their car needs from here on out! Thank you Ian!" - Denese

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Keep Your Cool in Hot Summer Cars

1

When it’s hot outside, one of the last places you want to be is sitting in traffic without a properly functioning air conditioning (A/C) system. To help avoid this uncomfortable situation, the Car Care Council recommends having your A/C system checked annually to make sure it is functioning at its peak performance level when the temperatures are soaring.

“Making sure your A/C system is working properly will give you the peace of mind knowing that your vehicle will keep you cool and safe when you hit the road this summer,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Not only are high temperatures harmful to the body with prolonged exposure, but they can provide unnecessary wear and tear on a vehicle.”

A vehicle’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning system (HVAC) keeps the interior cabin comfortable in any season by providing the right temperature and humidity level. Typical A/C service consists of the following steps:

  • Service technician visually inspects hoses, lines, seals and other components for leaks as well as inspect the drive belt for cracks or damage.
  • Technician checks pressures to test operation, refrigerant charge and outlet temperatures.
  • If the system is found to be low on refrigerant, a leak test is performed to find the source of the leak. Keep in mind that if your vehicle is leaking refrigerant, it is damaging the ozone layer.
  • Refrigerant may be added if necessary to “top off” the system, although some states do not allow “topping off.”
  • A technician may also check for evidence of refrigerant cross-contamination, which is the mixing of refrigerants.
  • A/C service should also include a check of the compressor’s drive belt and tension.
